Look, I've struggled with this for years and now I'm finally doing something about it.

- I started by laying out a simple budget. Nothing totally draconian, but something that's realistic.
- Next, I set up an online savings account where money is automatically deposited from my checking account every month. I used a well-known bank in my area that also has the convenience of branch banking (http://www.univestdirect.com), but there are many out there.
- I reevaluated my spending habits: Is it a need or a want?
- I'm regularly balancing my checkbook and track where my money goes
- After creating a modest cushion, I'm paying of my debts, starting with those with the highest rates first.
While it's taken some effort and a change of habits, I'm gradually eating through my debt and I can see light at the end of the tunnel. Hey, If I can do it, anyone can!

A new website called "Mint" ("refreshing money management") promises to help you
-see where your money goes
-stop overspending and start "over saving"
-and control your finances by getting notifications about bill due dates (which many online bill pay services do already)

The feedback about the service's analysis and recommendations from ways to save makes it worth taking a look at. It is a startup that is backed by venture capital.

While you should always question a site that asks for financial and personal information, they are careful to spell out safe guards: http://www.mint.com/safe.html
Make sure your security software is up to date and running before setting up your account!

Here it is...

Just tally up the amount of money you are paying each year in interest. Doing that had a big impact on me. Then make a plan and stick to it. I also recommend the books The Total Money Makeover and Your Money or Your Life. Thankfully I'm well on my way to being totally debt free by the end of this year.

Well, I still have 50 cents in fines at the library, but other than that... I don't owe my parents (or my brother... ug.... money anymore. The money is going straight to my college fund, tithe, and spending. YAY!

How to do this. I want to. I have a good salary. I could earn more. I am looking for opportunities. The children's education is very important and it is also very expensive and this combined with the day to day expenses, consumes all the income.

Some ideas for saving money on house repairs from Money mag, Aug 2006 + some of my own tips.

-Tell the repair person a friend referred you, so they'll treat you better.
-Ask if there's a way to fix it yourself.
-Ask their rates and if there's a per-visit fee.
-If you can email a photo they may tell you they're the wrong person for the job.
-Ask if you can buy the supplies yourself, which could save money.
-Ask if they're insured and if the job has a warranty.

For important car repairs I go to the service dept for my car's dealer. But for non-risky car repairs I found a guy who used to be an authorized service person for my car's brand and charges about 40% of what the dealer charges (such as for fluid flushes).

I always casually mention that if the work is great i will be sure to spread the word and write a review online.

After going through Dave Ramsey's course, my husband & I went to a cash system (after establishing a budget). Seems so "old-school" after using debit cards. However, it has been the best thing in terms of saving money.

"Get out of debt, stay out of debt, and live prosperously" By Jerrold Mundis. He taught me how to manage money without feeling deprived. It's a great book.

Do you have a specific date to get out of debt by? What baby steps have you taken? Do you have a financial plan?

If anyone wants any personal advice just ask me, the notorious cheapskate. I am very good at living within my means, much to some of your annoyances :)
